From Lebanon to Lafayette: First Year MBA Student’s Journey

Having visited Krannert in 2014, Lamis Sleiman, 1st Year MBA student, “was convinced that she needed to be a part of the program.”

Initially drawn to Krannert School of Management by reason of distinguished reviews, 40 percent international population and diverse professor portfolios- Sleiman made her final decision after speaking with the admissions team.

Originally from Lebanon, Sleiman was looking for not only an exceptional academic experience, but a culturally rich one.

Although West Lafayette is a far cry from New York, Miami, or Chicago, Sleiman is perfectly content and enjoys the Midwestern feel. Some of her favorite activities include exploring town on the weekends and hosting potlucks for her peers to learn more about her country and culture.

Hailing from such a culturally rich country herself, Sleiman has been able to give the gift of knowledge to her fellow classmates by hosting after-school presentations highlighting Lebanese culture. As a country with roughly 5 million inhabitants, comparable to Indiana, Lebanon is known for much more than its famous Middle Eastern commercial hub. It is also known for its music, dance, nature, cuisine, fashion, and some of the oldest recorded cities in the world.

The exchange of cultures is something Krannert supports and highlights as a crucial piece of the global educational component.

Sleiman adds that the international melange of students is enriching, and she is enoying her experience so far.

“West Lafayette is very close to Indianapolis and Chicago, so fun is never too far away. The blessing of this town is that it is MUCH cheaper to live here than in others parts of the US, while also maintaining a great academic and cultural experience. This is a major consideration that students should factor in when making their decision about school choice."

With an internship at Audi Bank lined up for this summer in Lebanon and connections with Cummins gained from Krannert networking events, Sleiman contributes much of her success to the Krannert network.

As part of the full-time 2 year MBA program, Sleiman is looking forward to continuing her relationship with Cummins.

“Krannert is renowned for its vast alumni network. Being in and around career fairs, using LinkedIn, and even keeping in touch with the Krannert Professional Development Center helped me get in touch with alumni. Currently I am not eligible to work in the US due to visa restrictions. However, building up this network is important for my future endeavors.”
