Admissions to MS in Economics Program
The program is designed for students with strong quantitative backgrounds, including courses in calculus and statistics. Students with an undergraduate degree in the Sciences, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (the "STEM" disciplines) are strongly preferred, although students from other disciplines will be considered. Prior course work in Economics is not expected. Students are expected to complete an application, provide undergraduate transcripts (minimum GPA 3.0), and Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) scores. International students must provide evidence of English Proficiency. New classes are enrolled each August. Applicants are evaluated by a committee consisting of Economics faculty and administrators. Applications must be received by July 15 to be admitted to the fall (August) class Current and former Purdue University undergraduate STEM majors may request a waiver of the GRE requirement. GRE tests are administered four times a year. Applicants are advised to take the test no later than March 1 before the August admissions date. The GRE test score is preferred, but a GMAT score can be used in place of a GRE score. An applicant can request a waiver for both tests. However, such a waiver is unlikely to be granted unless the individual has demonstrated high performance in a broad range of mathematics and statistics courses, and such courses are comparable in level and content to mathematics and statistics courses offered to STEM majors at U.S. Research Universities.
TOEFL. The Test of English as a Foreign Language, or the "TOEFL", must be taken by applicants whose native language is not English. The official score report for the TOEFL should be sent from Educational Testing Services (ETS) to Purdue University:
