The Purdue Mall Fountain stands 38 feet tall in the center of the Purdue Mall and is made of 228 tons of concrete. The fountain was a gift from the class of 1939 and was dedicated on their 50th anniversary in 1989. The fountain sprays 588 gallons of recycled water a minute April through August and dazzles visitors with 280 colored lights that illuminate the surging jets of water

Requirements of the OBHR Doctoral Program

All OBHR PhD students are required to:
  • Complete a minimum of 48 credits of appropriate graduate coursework.

  • Complete and present to the OBHR area a 606 research project by the Fall of the 2nd year of the program.

  • Pass the content and methods prelim examination.

  • Develop effective teaching skills and to teach as needed by the OBHR area.

  • Competently contribute to research projects that lead to papers being submitted for presentation at national conferences and for publication.

  • Seek a dissertation fellowship by submitting a dissertation funding proposal.

  • Submit and defend a dissertation proposal.

  • Complete and defend a dissertation.


Coursework Requirements

1. Managerial Skills (take any 3 below; waived for MBA graduates) (8-9 credits)

  • MGMT 600 Accounting for Managers (3 credits)

  • MGMT 610 Financial Management (3 credits)

  • MGMT 620 Marketing Management (3 credits)

  • MGMT 650 Business Strategy (3 credits)

  • MGMT 660 Operations Management (3 credits)

  • OBHR 681 Behavior in Organizations or OBHR 631 Human Resource Systems (2 credits)

2. Research Methods (18 credits)

  • PSYC 681a Research Methods I (3 credits)

  • OBHR 605 Research Methods II (3 credits)

  • Students choose with the help of their advisor 12 credits of graduate statistics from a slate of courses such as Introduction to Statistics, ANOVA and Experimental Design, Regression Analysis, Multivariate Statistics, Multi-Level Analyses, Structural Equation Modeling, and Psychometric Theory.

3. OBHR Major Coursework (16 credits)

  • OBHR 683 OB Survey (3 credits)

  • OBHR 684 HR survey (3 credits)

  • OBHR 690A Leadership (2 credits)

  • OBHR 690C Teams (2 credits)

  • OBHR 690D Strategic HR (2 credits)

  • OBHR 690B OT (2 credits)

  • OBHR 606 Research Practicum (2 credits)

4.  Minor Coursework (6 credits)

Minors are designed by students with help from their advisor.  A minor in I/O Psychology is recommended.  Example courses are shown below:

  • PSYC 682 Motivation (3 credits)

  • PSYC 683 Work Attitudes (3 credits)

TOTAL (not counting dissertation credits)  48-49 credits
