Goals:
Logistics deals with the integration of information and material flows to delivery efficiencies to the firm. In short, we will discuss all aspects of managing the flow of material in the firm except the details within the plant. In many logistics situations at least two independent decision makers are involved, hence the need for contracts to coordinate the system. We will discuss issues motivated by the automobile, consumer goods, apparel, electronics and grocery industries. We will first discuss concepts such as total logistics costs, coordinating transportation and inventory, using information updates, cross docking, take or pay contracts, JIT distribution, etc. The course provides an overview of concepts, provides specific tools that can be used to make decisions and provides applications of the concepts and tools in practice while understanding the impact on the other functional areas of the firm.
