Purdue CIBER is pleased to announce
this Doctoral Conference
in field of
Business Language Pedagogy
to be held October 9-10, 2009.
 

The conference is sponsored by the Purdue Center for
International Business Educationand Research, Confucius
Institute at Purdue University, and the CIBERs of
Duke University, Indiana University, Temple University,
and the University of Illinois – Champaign/Urbana.

Attendees Invited
All foreign-language doctoral students are invited to apply, especially those in the formative stages of their research agendas. Lodging and most meals will be provided.  Organized by CIBER and Purdue’s Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, this conference is co-chaired by Dr. Allen Wood, Professor of Business French, Dr. Wei Hong, Professor of Business Chinese, and Dr. Maria Cooks, Associate Professor of Business Spanish.  Conference presentations will consist of relevant opinion and research papers from invited business language faculty of leading U.S. research universities. The conference will focus on issues related to business language academic environment and pedagogy with the expectation that such issues eventually will be incorporated in the teaching and research portfolios of participants.

Location
The conference will be held on the West Lafayette campus of Purdue University from Friday, 
October 9, through Saturday, October 10, 2009.  A welcome reception will be held Thursday
evening, October 8.  Purdue CIBER will cover lodging and food expenses of participating students.   Up to approximately 25 students from major universities will be selected to participate.


Agenda and Themes
The agenda is still tentative.  The format will be a combination of presentations and discussions on
three or more themes:

Theme 1: Current environment for business language education  (e.g., Prevailing academic and business attitudes toward business language and culture education, the state of the university job market for business language specialists, developing an Interdisciplinary Language/Business Ph.D. program, prospects for development of an academic specialty in business languages and linguistics)  

Theme 2: Career Development ( e.g., the “ins and outs” of obtaining a faculty job in business languages, what a “business language” Ph.D. plan of study should include, doing research and
getting published in Business Languages.

Theme 3: Instructional Design (e.g., selecting a business language textbook, developing business language courses, study abroad and business languages, instructional strategies, incorporating
applied linguistics to business languages, and distance learning of business languages).

Application Process
Interested students should complete the attached form, and send along with a description of research interests, curriculum vitae, and letter of nomination from a faculty member.
