Dr. Kolar earned her Ph.D. from King's College University of London. She also holds a Juris Doctor degree from DePaul University College of Law and spent 8 years working for the State of Illinois. She first held a position in the Legal Division of the Illinois Liquor Control Commission and then served as a Judicial Law Clerk / Research Attorney for the Hon. Joseph N. Casciato for 5 years.

Before coming to Purdue University Krannert School of Management in 2012, Deanna taught International Legal Management and Leadership at IAE Aix-en-Provence Graduate School of Management in France. She also taught International Management at ISC Paris School of Management. She gained corporate human resource experience working for the Hyundai Corporation and Borders Group Inc.

Her areas of research include: stigmatized professions, employee autonomy and employee embeddedness. As a faculty member at Purdue, she teaches Human Resource Management, Labor Relations, International Human Resource Management and Organizational Behavior. She also serves as the Director of the Master of Human Resource Management Program.
