Professor De's primary teaching interests have included data management, although he has also taught courses in telecommunications, systems analysis and design, management of IT, and other areas. His current research interests include e-business, social networks, software engineering, and heterogeneous databases.
Professor De has published over 70 articles in a wide spectrum of academic journals, including Management Science, Information Systems Research, MIS Quarterly, INFORMS Journal on Computing, Journal of MIS, Decision Sciences, IEEE Transactions on Knowledge & Data Engineering, IEEE Transactions on Software Engineering, IEEE Transactions on Communications, Operations Research, Naval Research Logistics, European Journal of Operational Research, Production & Operations Management, and The Review of Financial Studies, as well as in professional outlets such as Interfaces (currently, INFORMS Journal on Applied Analytics) and MIT Sloan Management Review.
Professor De has been quite active in the MIS professional arena. Currently, he serves on the advisory boards of three journals, Information Technology & Management (since 2000), Information Systems Frontiers (since 2010), and Financial Innovation (since 2014), and previously served on the advisory boards of two others, Information Systems Research (1999-2006) and Journal of the Association for Information Systems (2016-2019). He also served as co-editor-in-chief of Journal of Electronic Commerce Research (2013-2021), as associate editor of Management Science (1995-2008), Information Systems Research (1991-1998), Decision Sciences (1993-1999), and Decision Support Systems (1992-2015), and on the editorial board of Journal of MIS (1989-2021), among others. He was program chair of the International Conference on Information Systems (ICIS) in 1999 and workshop co-chair of the Workshop on Information Technologies & Systems (WITS) in 1994. He served as co-chair of the ICIS doctoral consortium in 2006 and of the ICIS dissertation competition in 2007. He was president of WITS from 1998 to 2000 and its advisor from 2001 to 2003 and again from 2014 to 2019. He also served as president of INFORMS Information Systems Society (ISS) over three consecutive terms during 1990-1993. He was named an inaugural distinguished fellow of ISS in 2009 and a fellow of the Association for Information Systems (AIS) in 2014. He received the ISS President’s Service Award in 2023.
From 2002 to until his retirement from active service in 2020, Professor De served on the Krannert faculty as Accenture University Professor of Information Technology. Prior to joining Krannert in 2002, he was Sherman-Standard Register Chair in MIS at the University of Dayton for more than a decade. He started his academic career at Ohio State University, beginning as assistant professor of Accounting and MIS in 1978 and becoming associate professor in 1983 and professor in 1988. He was at Cornell University during 1983-1984 as visiting associate professor of MIS.
