Krannert student helps senior philanthropy effort

Look carefully under the war paint, and you'll see Krannert Ambassador Sarah Endress, BSIM '02, whose face appeared all over campus on posters announcing the Senior Face Off fundraising competition between Purdue and Indiana University last winter. Seniors from the two universities inspired their classmates to pledge financial contributions as a way to give back to their respective schools.  Victory was measured through higher participation rate, not the money earned. At the contest end May 1, Purdue's participation rate was 11.4 percent, while IU's was 14.7 percent--but though Purdue came in second in participation, the University actually collected more funds than IU, earning more than $50,000 for Purdue. Gift funds can be used to help underwrite the cost of student programs and services, such as career development resources, classroom equipment, technology and software upgrades, and scholarships.

Krannert student wins Best MBA Paper

Recent grad Andrea Sjovall, MBA '02, had the winning entry in the "Best MBA Paper in Corporate Citizenship" competition through the Center for Corporate Citizenship at Boston College. She won $5,000 for her paper, "From Actions to Impressions: Cognitive Attribution Theory and the Formation of Corporate Reputation," and presented the paper at the 2002 Academy of Management conference in Colorado.

Arnold C. Cooper, the Louis A. Weil Jr. Professor of Management, was her advisor for the paper, which explores the ways in which people form impressions of companies, and discusses the ways in which corporations can improve the public's impression of them through community service and similar positive actions.

Charity Ball a success

The master's Charity Ball raised more than $3,000 for the Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) of Lafayette. Last semester, more than 30 Krannert students participated in a school-based mentoring program called the Biggs in School. Every week, the students headed over to Miller Elementary School to eat lunch with their "littles" and play games, chat, or just hang out.

Students receive CEER grants

This year, the Center for E-Business Education and Research (CEER) awarded dissertation research grants to PhD candidates Matt Barcaskey and Junewei Guan. Barcaskey's research will examine the impact of the Internet distribution of initial public offerings (IPOs) on the offering process. Junewei will focus on designing market-based resource sharing mechanisms for person-to-person networking.
