School of Management Council (SMC) Update
By Derek Mauk, SMC President
After ending 2006–07 on a high note with its participation in the first-ever Management Week, the School of Management Council (SMC) was eager to pick up where it left off in the spring.
As students came back to campus in the fall, members of SMC were already hard at work. The Host-A-Freshman program, led by Stephanie Hansen, welcomed incoming Krannert students the day before classes began. School administrators who shared their insight and advice with the new class included Dean Rick Cosier, Associate Dean Kwei Tang, and Sara Stein Koch, Krannert’s new director of undergraduate programs.
The following week, the Peer Mentor In Management Program (PMP) paired Krannert upperclassmen with two or three first-year management students to assist in their acclimation to the increased workload and demanding schedule. More than 140 freshmen took advantage of the program, led by 67 sophomore, junior, and senior mentors — an improvement over last year’s level of participation.
The recruitment and orientation committee, chaired by Tavia Murray and Melissa Myslinski, has also been hard at work. The annual Activity Fair, held in the armory during Boiler Gold Rush in August, was successful in generating interest in freshmen involvement in SMC. The Management Club Expo, organized by Management Ambassadors, also garnered interest in Krannert student organizations.
Later this semester, students from Indiana University will travel to Purdue to compete in the annual Kelley-Krannert Case Challenge. Caroline Parrin and her committee are currently working to plan the event and expect to once again bring victory back to the Boilers.
Fall is a bittersweet time for SMC, as seniors leave the council at the end of the semester and depart from Krannert in the spring to begin professional careers. We would like to thank our outgoing members for their contributions to the organization, offering our best wishes to Rachel Keeker, Tavia Murray, Caroline Parrin, and Justin Snyder.
We would also like to extend gratitude to our dedicated alumni for their continued support of Krannert’s undergraduate program. We look forward to working together toward the school’s ongoing success.
