During Homecoming weekend, Krannert honored several individuals with awards. The Krannert School Distinguished Service Award, presented to individuals who have given distinguished service to enhance the visibility of the Krannert School and the quality of its programs, went to Melissa Emery, founding partner of the marketing research and consulting firm Viewfinder, and to former Purdue President Steven Beering.

The Distinguished Alumni Award, given to Krannert alumni who have demonstrated success in their professions, community service achievements, and service to Purdue University and the Krannert School of Management, went to Kenneth Stuff, president and chief executive officer of Syndicate Systems Inc., and to James Lewis, vice president of financial management for Walt Disney Co.

The John S. Day Distinguished Alumni Academic Service Award recognizes an outstanding Krannert graduate whose service within the academic community reflects the spirit and service of former Krannert Dean John Day to Purdue University and the Krannert School of Management. The 2000 award recipient was Dennis Weidenaar, professor of economics and former dean of the Krannert School.

MSM Changes to MBA

In February, the Purdue University Board of Trustees approved a proposal to retitle Krannert's current master of science in management (MSM) degree as a master of business administration (MBA).

"Our program is already very similar to other top MBA programs, so we contemplate no changes in curriculum," says Richard A. Cosier, Krannert dean and Leeds Professor of Management.

All students currently enrolled in the MSM program have the option of earning the MBA, and all students entering the program beginning next fall and later will be awarded the MBA degree upon completion of their studies.

U.S. News Gives Krannert High Marks

Krannert's undergraduate program rose from 14th to 13th in the nation according to rankings released by U.S. News & World Report, released September 1. When compared to only public universities, the ranking is even higher, at ninth.

Several programs in the Krannert School were singled out as among the best departments in the nation. Purdue ranks third in production/operations; 10th in human resources; 13th in management information systems; and 14th in general management.

"We are extremely pleased to be ranked in the top 15 undergraduate business programs in the country," says Krannert dean Richard Cosier. "Our rankings were very good last year, and they've improved this year. We believe that to be a reflection of our attention to teaching quality and student services."
