 Make way for Rawls Hall

Jerry Rawls, major campaign ontributor; Rick Cosier, dean of the Krannert School of Management and Leeds Professor of Management; Martin Jischke, president of Purdue University; and Dick Dauch, major contributor and campaign chair; attended the demolition along with many other supporters.

Rawls Hall, the new $37 million building that is the centerpiece of the Krannert at the Frontier campaign, came a step closer to reality in late October with the clearing of several buildings.

With Purdue President Martin Jischke, Krannert Dean Rick Cosier, and several campaign contributors and campus dignitaries on hand, a backhoe ripped through the former Classnotes building (once a gas station) in a matter of minutes.

Groundbreaking for Rawls Hall will take place in late summer, and the building should be ready for occupancy for the fall 2003 semester.

Jerry Rawls, MSIA '68, president and CEO of Finisar Corp. in California's Silicon Valley, was present for the ground-clearing ceremony. Rawls, who donated $10 million for the building, says Krannert was a key ingredient in his success.

"It was important to my maturation and understanding of what the business world is about," Rawls says. "This
couldn't be a more exciting cause for me.

"The building will be technologically state-of-the-art," says G. Logan Jordan, assistant dean for administration. "All classrooms and study areas will be wired for the Internet. The commons area will have walk-up Web kiosks and wireless access to university libraries and the Internet."

"All classrooms will have the latest audio-visual presentation equipment, and the facility will have a media production center. There is also a classroom suite for distance learning, both two-way and multi-site."

Krannert School alumni are being solicited to fund the information and communication technology in the future Rawls Hall.
