Forbes keynotes leadership series

Publisher and former presidential candidate Steve Forbes headlined October’s fifth annual Krannert Leadership Speakers Series, which attracted a sellout audience of nearly 800 people.

Forbes, who serves as president and chief executive officer of Forbes and editor-in-chief of Forbes magazine, began his presentation with an optimistic assessment of the U.S. economy. “Perception tends to lag behind reality,” Forbes said. “Despite the very real problems and changes we’re all facing, the American economy — when you look at its fundamentals — is far stronger than people give it credit for.”

Reiterating much of the platform he advanced during his campaigns for the Republican presidential nomination in both 1996 and 2000, Forbes also advocated the creation of a flat tax rate, medical savings accounts, a new Social Security system, education reform, and a stronger role in the global economy. “We can meet the challenges of an uncertain world with openness, innovation, and entrepreneurship,” he said.

The event also recognized several notable alumni, including Krannert Leadership Award recipient Venu Srinivasan, MSM ’77, chairman and managing director of TVS Motor Company, former chief executive officer and managing director of Sundaram Clayton, and a director in several other companies in the TVS group, a large conglomerate with over $2 billion in revenues from a variety of businesses.

Named a “Star of Asia” by Business Week International in 2003 and conferred with the prestigious JRD Tata Corporate Leadership Award in 2004 by the All-India Management Association (AIMA), Srinivasan considered the recognition from his alma mater to be especially gratifying. “I thank my teachers, the president of the University, and the dean of Krannert for this singular honor,” he said.

Sponsors of the event, proceeds from which are used to fund scholarships, included Guidant Foundation, Ford, LaSalle Bank, Saint-Gobain Containers, Wellpoint, Ice Miller, Target, Inside Indiana Business, Lafayette Printing, and the Purdue Alumni Association.
