Master's students fare well in case competitions

Students in Krannert’s Master of Science in Human Resources Management (MSHRM) program organized and staged a human capital case competition at Purdue in January 2009. The Krannert team, comprised of Royce Carvalho, Kim Corbitt, Jason Lebron, and Amber Oliver, won the inaugural competition, beating teams from seven other schools including Darden, Emory, and Georgetown.

A team of MBA students from Krannert placed second in the Smith Mergers and Acquisitions Case Competition held at the Smith School of Business in College Park, Maryland, in October 2008, collecting a $2,500 prize for the Krannert Finance Club. Teams delivered pitches to Wall Street bankers, corporate executives, Smith faculty, and alumni. Purdue team members included Bilal Shahid, David Iverson, Matthew Jackson and Ulka Malekar.

A team of Krannert master’s students also placed third at Owen Vanderbilt’s Human Capital Case Competition in Nashville, Tennessee, in October 2008. The team was given two weeks to analyze a merger and acquisition case, addressing issues of cost increases and saving, retaining top talent, and labor relations. Krannert participants included Lee Bush, Chad Byron, Kim Corbitt, Geoff Gauthier, Mayu Matsumoto, and Avik Saha.

Krannert undergraduates Vince PeGan and Gerald Sims were among three seniors who completed 24 Purdue traditions in 24 hours prior to the Boilermaker’s final home football game against Indiana University last November.

Along with Will Bowman, a student in the School of Health Sciences, PeGan and Sims began at noon on the Friday before the game by participating in the annual Purdue-IU blood drive. That was followed by a ride on the Boilermaker Special and a series of traditions, such as giving a campus tour, shaking President Córdova’s hand, attending band practice, and sledding down Slayter Hill.

With less than an hour and three traditions remaining, the trio completed its quest by tailgating, attending the football game, and singing “Hail Purdue” during the Purdue “All-American” Marching Band halftime performance.

“It was an intense but fun day,” says Sims. “I now feel like a complete Boilermaker.”
