The Krannert School is saddened to report the recent deaths of Cornell A. Bell, Charalambos “Roko” Aliprantis, and Myra LeFevers.

ROKO ALIPRANTIS, who passed away in February, was the James Brooke Henderson Distinguished Professor of Economics at Krannert and also served Purdue as a professor of mathematics. His specializations included economic theory, where he made path-breaking contributions in general equilibrium theory. He authored or coauthored 12 textbooks and more than 90 scholarly articles.

Aliprantis was also noted for his tremendous service to the profession, including his organization of a biennial conference on economic theory, the Society for the Advancement of Economic Theory, the founding of the scholarly journals Economic Theory and Annals of Finance, and his work as editor-in-chief of Positivity, a mathematical research journal.

A conference celebrating Aliprantis’s life and achievements was held at the University of Kansas in November 2007, resulting in the publication of a special issue in his honor by the Journal of Mathematical Economics.

“Roko is warmly remembered for his substantial service to the Department of Economics at Purdue, including his generosity and loyalty to graduate students and faculty members,” says Loeb Professor of Economics Jack Barron.

CORNELL BELL, who passed away in March, spent his career recruiting and mentoring minority students through the Business Opportunity Program (BOP), which he led for more than 36 years.

“Dr. Bell’s dedication to the Business Opportunity Program had a positive impact on the lives of its more than 800 alumni, as well as everyone who knew him,” says Krannert Dean Rick Cosier. “His work was instrumental in helping minorities receive the welcome and support necessary to attend and succeed at Krannert. He was a pioneer and a leader in promoting diversity at Purdue.”

Bell served the program from 1970 to his retirement in 2006. He received several state and Purdue awards for his service, most recently an honorary doctorate of management from the University in 2007 in recognition of his contributions to higher education and society. Former Indiana Gov. Evan Bayh named Bell a Sagamore of the Wabash in 1996.

Bell also received the Harold T. Amrine Visionary Award in 1994 and the Indiana Bell Award in 1991. He received the Purdue Alumni Association’s Special Boilermaker Award in 1987 and the M. Beverley Stone Non-Academic Counseling Award in 1990

MYRA LEFEVERS, who passed away in February, joined the Krannert staff in 2004 as an administrative assistant in the strategic management area, where she provided support for the Strategic Management Society, the Dauch Center for the Management of Manufacturing Enterprises, and the Global Supply Chain Management Initiative. She most recently served as an assistant to Lee Schwarz, Krannert’s Louis A. Weil Jr. Professor of Management.

“Myra’s upbeat and engaged attitude provided us all with an example of grace and perspective,” says Logan Jordan, associate dean for administration.
