Second-Year MSHRM Student
Why should a prospective student choose the Krannert School?
"You come to Business school to get a (better or different) job. Krannert doesn’t just prepare you for that, Krannert throws it at you. There is a heavy focus on career placement and success from day one, complete with company exposure, networking, and applicable training, not just memorizing facts in class.”
What extracurricular clubs are you involved in at Krannert, and how have they contributed to your experience?
“I am a first year representative for Krannert Graduate Society of Black Managers (KGSBM) and a member of the Purdue chapter of the Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM). These groups have given me direct exposure to alumni and companies of my interest. They have also given me the opportunity to use and develop skills in organization, event planning, and leadership, which are all skills that organizations constantly look for. They have also helped me build a large network of friends and colleagues that I can reach out to for any reason.”
Your classmates come from a variety of work backgrounds...what have you been able to learn from them?
“How things happen in the real world. Coming in with little work experience, it is great to learn about how real high level business meetings and transactions go, here and in other countries. They also give a very different look and some things I think to be easy or simple. The chance to explain some areas or concepts that others may not understand lets me expand my grasp of the topic.”
How has the Krannert School helped develop your leadership skills?
"Here I have been given multiple leadership roles and given a chance to really learn how to manage different types of people. Throughout all of the classes and activities at Krannert, being a successful and favorable leader is preached."
How would you describe living in West Lafayette?
“Nice. There is a perfect balance of fun and focus. Being in a small town with a lot of likeminded students makes it extremely easy to find resources and ideas. It is also a great environment for interaction with those people. West Lafayette is a true college town with a strong self-identity and lots of pride.”
Away from Krannert...what do you do for fun?
“I personally am a huge sports fan and being around the Purdue campus has a lot of opportunity to enjoy quality athletics with many people that have the same passions. There are also a lot of social locations that I can enjoy with the family of people have built at Krannert. There is everything including music and dancing, bars, sport events, museums, and cultural events and displays.”
What do you like most about the Krannert School and Purdue?
“I love the tight knit network of individuals that I have grown with. This family wants me to succeed and tries to help anyway possible, and this includes faculty, classmates, and the public alike.”
How have you been assisted in your job search?
“Krannert Alumni want to see us succeed, so they will try all in their power to get us jobs. I have had alumni help me get interviews with multiple companies. The Krannert Professional Development Center office is also extremely helpful in helping me reach out to companies that are not as active on the Purdue campus. Within the first 2 months of school, I have an internship offer and have already begun conversations of potential full time positions post-graduation with multiple companies. “
When we catch up with you in 10 years, what do you expect to be doing?
“I will be working as a high level HR manager or recruiter in a major organization. In addition, I will be doing some sort of coaching (or recruiting) for football at the high school or small college level.”
