Applied Management Principles (AMP): Participant Testimonials
Since its inception in 1998, nearly 700 participants have completed the Applied Management Principles program. This program has included participants from a wide range of companies including Alcoa, Chicago Housing Authority, Eli Lilly and Company, Indianapolis Colts, John Deere, National Institute of Health, NISSAN, Quebecor World, and Sun Chemical.
"The AMP program provided important know-how to better perform my duties. All the items covered during the course are related to every aspect of my work. The great opportunity was not only in hearing the academic point of view, but also in sharing views with Purdue University staff and students in and out of the classroom. I really recommend this course and hope many people take advantage of this for their work."
- Parid Alimhillaj, Director, Flight Safety, Civil Aviation Authority of Albania
"AMP is an excellent way for business managers who are in non-administrative roles to get an understanding of all aspects of business administration. It’s helped me to become a well-rounded manager and a better contributor to my company’s business strategy and improvement initiatives."
- Blaine Cooper, Director, Business Systems and Manufacturing, Matrix Design Group
"I highly recommend the Applied Management Principles (AMP) Program for anyone seeking a better understanding of essential business topics such as accounting, finance, marketing, strategy and more. As someone who had never taken a business course in college or graduate school, I was especially impressed with the faculty’s comprehensive, yet challenging approach to the subject matter. I learned so much in two weeks, it truly was like earning a mini-MBA. I also enjoyed the team approach that AMP employs, matching you up with three or four other students from various academic and industry backgrounds. You really get a sense for what it’s like to sit in a boardroom, with leaders with differing viewpoints, trying to tackle difficult business issues."
- Jonathan L. Schramm, Associate Director of Recruiting, Purdue MBA and MS Programs, Krannert School of Management, Purdue University
"We no longer live in a world where the best job candidates possess either technical business skills or have a background in the liberal arts. Indeed the most successful job seekers have undergone training in both areas. This makes them a tremendous asset to any company as they can work in a variety of different capacities. As a doctoral student in Communication, I decided to enroll in the AMP program to gain a better understanding of technical concepts such as accounting, strategy, and finance. Participating in the program was one of the best decisions that I have made. I valued the fact that I received training from award winning professors who are among the best and most knowledgeable in their respective fields. I appreciated the opportunity to work through concepts together with my program colleagues. Since I have completed this program, I now feel like a more viable potential job candidate who has much to offer any organization that I may work for in the future."
-Shavonne Shorter, Bilsland Strategic Initiative Fellow and Organizational Communication PhD Candidate, Brian Lamb School of Communication, Purdue University
"The AMP program gave me a snapshot of an MBA program and allowed me to spend two weeks focused on learning. Before, I had only limited capabilities in a few key areas. AMP helped me develop new skills and exceed those limitations. I can now communicate with people throughout the organization and understand what they are asking of me."
- Rocky Harris, Vice President, Houston Dynamo, Major League Soccer (MLS)
"AMP is the best investment I've made in myself in years. I believe adding value is always a great option both for the company and the individual. This program is an excellent introduction to bringing business concepts and philosophy to those with a more scientific and/or technical background; I highly recommend and endorse it."
- Carl R. Byrd, Director, Office of Development Management, Chicago Housing Authority
Here are additional reactions from our participants:
"You learn an invaluable language that is useful when interviewing, taking plant trips, meeting managers, etc. You learn enough to understand 'management speak...' "
"Participating in this program made me realize the importance of viewing the firm as a whole, of learning the basics of financial language and understanding how to read financial reports, and most of all, the need for strategic thinking at all levels of the firm."
"I feel that the format and scope of the AMP program covered the basics of what any employee in a private workplace should know about 'nuts and bolts.' Often, scientists are placed in positions related so intensively to research and/or development that they do not appreciate that the goal of a company is foremost to survive. (AMP) made me appreciate more fully the importance of management and finance personnel."
"I am able to participate in and contribute to the business aspects of product development."
"My employer thought very highly of the program during the interview process."
"Interviewers have been unanimously impressed by the fact that I have some formal business training, noting that a substantial part of the job being offered would involve budgeting, marketing of research ideas, and HR management."
"One of the factors in the success of our start-up firm was our attendance in the AMP program. It gave us an appreciation for the traditional areas of a business and a foundation in best business practices."
