Arriving at Purdue

Parking Information

The following parking information is taken from several sources provided by Purdue’s Parking Facilities Office.  For additional information and/or questions, contact the Parking Facilities Office at (765) 494-9494.  The office, located in the Northwestern Avenue Parking Garage, is open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  Watch for updates about parking at the Parking Office website.

  • In general, restricted parking permit hours are from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.  However, there are several locations where additional restrictions apply to areas as posted.
  • To purchase a parking permit, go to the Parking Facilities Office in the Northwestern Avenue Parking Garage.  Be sure to take a valid driver’s license and proof of your address, such as a copy of your lease or a bill showing your address.
  • Commuter Permits – Only students who live outside of a 1.5-mile radius of campus qualify for a parking permit. The following are permit options:
    • C-lot permits cost $100 per year. These will be available beginning August 3, 2009.  No parking permits will be sold before that date.  Students purchasing a C-lot permit may park in specified open parking lots.  A map of the C-lots closest to Krannert can be found at Parking Map
    • C-garage permits cost $250 per year. These permits are garage specific, so a limited number of permits are sold for each garage. The Parking Office has confirmed for us that they have sold all C-garage permits for 2009-10 school year.
    • A and B permits are available for students working for the university 30 hours per week or more; passes are available beginning August 1. You must provide the appropriate Purdue form, signed by your department head, to document that you are a university employee for the required number of hours. Contact the Parking Facilities Office for more detailed information.

    • University Residences (includes Hawkins Graduate House and Purdue Village ) – Students who reside in the University Residence system will need to contact their Housing Office to inquire about parking.
    • West Lafayette - Parking on West Lafayette streets that rim the campus is mostly limited to two hours. Parking rules are closely monitored and enforced.

Should I live close to campus?

    • Living within walking distance is very convenient.  It may also have some drawbacks.  It is also nice to have the option to drive when the weather is bad, parking can be a problem though.
    • You are coming to Indiana and it snows here.  With snow comes driving and parking problems—if you live close, that’s one less thing you have to worry about.
    • It’s good to stay close to Rawls.  If you are within walking distance you can go home to have lunch, then come back for meetings or go home and study, and then come back to campus for presentations.
    • Make sure you either live a) close enough to walk, or b) more than 1.5 miles from campus.  Make sure to ask apartment complexes if you are eligible for a C Permit if you plan on living there.
    • If you do not plan to drive, living on campus is better.

Besides driving, what other options do I have?

    • Parking is an issue.  Living on a convenient bus route is a big plus.
    • You should have good transportation options no matter where you live.  During the first year, you don’t want to spend a lot of time traveling back and forth from school.  Make sure the bus routes will be able to get you back and forth consistently, or that you have a vehicle and are prepared to get to campus at a time you can get a parking spot.

What time do I need to get to campus to get a parking spot?

    • The real issue in living off campus is the parking at Krannert.  The lot fills up with undergrads by 7:25 and we have to come early just to get a spot.
    • The issue with parking depends on what time you get to campus, not so much because of how far away you live.  There is just not enough parking near Rawls.  If you get to campus by 7:25 then you can get a spot in C-parking; otherwise, you’ll have to park in 2 hour parking.  It’s nice if you know someone that lives in your apartment complex, then you can carpool sometimes.
    • If you drive and want to park in the lot behind Rawls, you need to get there before 7:15 am in order to get a spot.  This lot fills up fast with undergrads and grad students.  As a first year, you are not entitled to a C garage permit until your second year.
