Persons who tend to be analytical in nature, and those who enjoy probing all aspects of a problem may want to consider finance as a career. Business opportunities in finance typically allow for creativity for individuals who are self motivated.
Some jobs available in the area of finance include the following:
Corporations - A finance minor prepares an individual for jobs involving capital budgeting, financial administration, project evaluation, cash forecasting, budgetary control, investment of surplus cash, cost control, internal auditing, and stockholder reporting.
Banking - Banks or other financial institutions may hire individuals for training programs directed toward (1) line positions such as operations manager and branch managers, or (2) a position such as commercial loan officer. Many larger banks prefer MS or MBA degrees. However, outstanding candidates with BS degrees have ample opportunities in banking.
Consulting - Financial consulting firms hire finance minors to work on projects that require financial analysis and financial projections.
Investments - Brokerage firms and insurance companies hire individuals for the position of security analyst. Insurance companies and bank trust departments provide good entry level experience for undergraduates interested in portfolio management. However, brokerage firms tend to hire MS or MBA graduates or those with an extensive corporate background. To become a stockbroker with a firm, some experience is valuable.
Another route to a career in finance could be an entry-level position in accounting with the intention of moving into a finance position after some experience. If you are interested in a line position in commercial banking, a strong background in economics (or related courses) may be equally important. |
