 Calculating Semester and Grad Grade Point Averages

To calculate a semester grade point average (GPA) multiply the course credit hours by the number of the grade received in each course (A=4; B=3; C=2; D=1; F=0).  Sum these values and divide by the total number of credit hours attempted.

Example:  4 Point System

COURSES

CREDITS

GRADE

POINTS

SOC 100

3

A

3x4=12

CHM 115

4

C

4x2=8

ENGR 106

2

B

2x3=6

PES 116E

1

F

1x0=0

MA 161

5

D

5x1=5

Sem. Credits = 15

Sem. Grade Points = 31

Sem. Grade Points/Sem. Credits Attempted = Sem. GPA

Example: 31/15 = 2.066 = 2.07*

To determine your overall Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA), you will need to determine the number of total grade points you have earned and the total credits you have attempted beginning with your first semester on campus.

Total Grade Points/Total Credits Attempted = Cumulative GPA

Example: 62/29 = 2.137 = 2.14*

*Purdue rounds indexes in the hundredths position.

Semester/Graduation Index Calculator

We cannot guarantee the accuracy of your calculations if you do not have the assistance of your Academic Advisor.

Part 1. How to calculate your Semester or Graduation Index.

  • Add up the number of hours of A, B, C, D, and F that you have earned.
  • Place totals in the appropriate boxes below.
  • Grades of P, N, and I are not used in the calculation.
  • Grades of WF are not included in the GPA calculation.
  • If a course has been repeated, use only the second enrollment information in the calculation.
  • Click the submit button and the calculator will calculate the values for you.
Credits of A X 4 = Points
Credits of B X 3 = Points
Credits of C X 2 = Points
Credits of D X 1 = Points
Credits of F X 0 = Points

Part 2. How to calculate the Semester Index necessary to change your Graduation Index to a desired value.

  • Use this to calculate how your graduation index will change based on the semester index you receive.
  • You will need to know how many hours and points you have before this semester's grades are added to your graduation index. You can calculate those in part 1 or in some cases you can read them off your most recent grade card.
  • A grade in a second enrollment in a class replaces the grade and credits of the first enrollment in the class when calculating graduation index.
