Tutors

Whenever you are experiencing trouble with a course, ask questions! If it would be helpful to have someone who could answer your questions as you do your homework or help you to review for exams, consider obtaining a tutor. It is not the tutor's job to reteach the class.

Whenever you have questions, get help immediately. No tutor will be able to help you catch up at the end of the semester. Tutorial help is useful only if it starts early enough to give you progressive assistance — do not use a tutor to cram in a semester's work in the last week.

Do not use a tutor to substitute for your reading and study efforts.

Supplemental Instruction

Supplemental Instruction (SI) assists students in historically difficult classes to master course content. Students not only understand the course material better, but they "learn how to learn." Records show that students who attend study sessions on a regular basis earn higher grades. Facts from past semesters:

  • Students in MA 154 who attended 11 or more sessions earned a mean course grade that was 0.77 higher than the course mean grade.
  • Students who attended PHYS 152 more than 10 sessions received a mean course grade that was 0.30 higher than the course mean grade.
  • Students in BIOL 204 who attended more than 10 sessions received a 1.48 higher mean course grade.
  • Supplemental Instruction is offered for BIOL 203, BIOL 204, CHM 115, CHM 116, CHM 257, ENGR 106, MATH 153, MATH 154, MATH 159, MATH 161, MATH 162, MGMT 200, MGMT 201, PHYS 152. The Supplemental Instruction Schedule can be found on the College of Liberal Arts' Academic Success Center Web site.
