Financial Planning and Scholarships

Studying abroad can be very affordable, but like any educational opportunity, it requires planning.  Study abroad programs vary in cost, depending on the type of program (Exchange, Co-Sponsored, or Direct Enroll), length of stay (year, semester, summer or spring break) and destination. In order to make study abroad affordable for interested students, Purdue offers many study abroad scholarship opportunities.

Purdue Study Abroad Scholarships:

  • $3000 - Semester programs
  • $2000 - Programs at least 6 weeks and 6 credits
  • $1000 - Short-term programs less than 6 weeks or 6 credits

Krannert Study Abroad Scholarships:

DeVos Study Abroad Scholarship:

Doug DeVos has served as president of Amway since 2002. He oversees daily operations of the company and shares the office of the chief executive with chairman Steve Van Andel. Doug is the youngest son of Amway co-founder Richard DeVos, who, with Steve's father Jay, started Amway in 1959. Doug, who joined Amway in 1986, previously served in various leadership positions with the company in Europe, the Americas, and Asia. He has served on the Krannert Dean's Advisory Council and the Krannert Global Strategic Advisory Council.

  • Scholarships range between $250-$1000 (length of study abroad program will impact scholarship amount)
  • Krannert students only
  • Requirements: 3.0 or higher GPA, essay questions and leadership experience
  • Application deadlines:
    • February 1st for Summer study abroad programs
    • April 1st for Fall study abroad programs
    • November 1st for Spring study abroad programs (including semester or spring break programs)

Nancy Handel Study Abroad Scholarship:

Ms. Handel retired as Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Applied Materials Inc. in January 2007. She had worked for the company in increasingly responsible roles since 1985. Applied Materials makes the equipment to make semiconductors and, in a recent move, solar power cells. Ms Handel was recognized for her work as CFO by Institutional Investor magazine which listed her among the "Best CFOs in America" in 2006 and by the Bay Area CFO of the Year Awards (2006) which recognized her community service.

  • Scholarships start at $1000 (length of study abroad program will impact scholarship amount)
  • Krannert students only
  • Requirements: 3.0 or higher GPA, essay questions and leadership experience
  • Application deadlines:
    • February 1st for Summer study abroad programs
    • April 1st for Fall study abroad programs
    • November 1st for Spring study abroad programs (including semester or spring break programs)

McDuffee Management Scholarship

Thomas McDuffee retired as Senior Vice President of Human Resources at Saint Gobain in Muncie, Indiana. He began his career with RCA and served 4 years as VP Human Resources in Taipei, Taiwan. He later worked for GE and Compaigne de Saint-Gobain of Paris, France. Mr. McDuffee has served on the Krannert Alumni Board for over 20 years and is a Past President. He also served as a member of the Dauch Center for the Management of Manufacturing Enterprises, Treasurer and Board Member of the Asian Society of IMA and is currently a member of the advisory board for the MSHRM program at Krannert. He is a long time recruiter of Krannert talent and frequently guest lectures in the graduate and undergraduate programs. Tom holds a BSIM and MSIR from Krannert.

  • $500 - Krannert Taiwan Spring Break program only
  • Krannert students only - BSIM and STEM majors preferred
  • Students may apply for the scholarship after being accepted to the Taiwan program. Contact Amy Kingma (krannertstudyabroad@purdue.edu) for more information.
  • Requirements: 3.0 or higher GPA, leadership experience and essay questions
  • Maximum of two scholarships to be awarded for the 2017 Spring Break program.

Telamon Scholarship

Albert Chen retired on October 1, 2015 as founder, chairman, president, and CEO of Telamon Corporation. The company is a service-based organization that simplifies business in the telecom, energy management, industrial assembly, business process outsourcing, and telehealth industries. Mr. Chen is the founder of Asian American Alliance, Inc.

Purdue Division of Financial Aid:

  • Students participating in study abroad programs may be eligible for federal financial aid. Even those students who are not currently receiving aid may be eligible for financial assistance for the period they study abroad.
