John S. Sofia

Director, Advanced Quality Planning

John S. Sofia holds a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering from Purdue University. He holds a master of business administration, with a focus on operations and production, from the University of Detroit, and is currently pursuing a master of quality degree from Eastern Michigan University.

Sofia began his automotive career at the former Chrysler Corporation in 1984 as a college-student-in-training in the Stamping, Assembly & Diversified Operations Division. He progressed through a series of manufacturing/engineering positions including production supervisor, product/quality/process engineer, and engineering design team leader.

Sofia joined AAM in March 1994 as area manager at Detroit Gear & Axle. He also served as manufacturing manager at Detroit Gear & Axle with responsibility for full-size truck axle production. In his role as manager of the Current Production & Process Engineering Group, Sofia was responsible for all front and rear axle design and production release. As director of Manufacturing Engineering Sofia’s duties included the launch of the General Motors Envoy and Trailblazer programs for AAM. While serving as plant manager at Detroit Forge, he was responsible for all aspects of the operations of AAM’s Detroit-based forging facility. In his current position as Director, Advance Quality Planning, he is responsible for all aspects of quality planning for the corporations manufacturing and engineering global facilities.

A New Jersey native, Sofia lives with his wife Julie and three children in Beverly Hills, Michigan.
