  Economic Policy Luncheon featuring Anson Soderbery

  The Purdue University Research Center in Economics (PURCE) hosts a monthly economic policy luncheon during the academic year. In April, the center's final event of the school year, Associate Professor of Economics Anson Soderbery will discuss "U.S. Protectionism from Trump to Biden." Is U.S. protectionism bipartisan? Soderbery will discuss the motivation for U.S. tariffs targeting China in 2018. These so-called Trump tariffs were politically controversial at inception, but have largely been maintained throughout the Biden presidency. Recent research has shed some light on the effects of these tariffs, and this econ policy luncheon will focus on preliminary findings that add nuance to the narrative. Dr. Anson Soderbery's fields of specialization are international trade, industrial organization and applied econometrics. Space is limited for our luncheons and registration is required.

  Economic Policy Luncheon featuring Cathy Zhang

  Payment systems — the way we pay for things — are a key component of an economy's infrastructure and serve a crucial role in facilitating trade and supporting growth. Growing global interconnectedness further underscores the importance of international payment systems. However, tensions inherently arise within payment systems due to their dual role in supporting trade while also being subject to government influence for policy objectives. Dr. Cathy Zhang will highlight some key stylized facts about modern payment systems and discuss some new challenges faced by policymakers, including how the use of the U.S. dollar as a policy tool has renewed efforts to replace the dollar with other currencies such as Chinese renminbi or cryptocurrency. Zhang is an associate professor of economics in the Daniels School whose research interests include macroeconomics, monetary economics and international economics. This event is hosted by the Daniels School's Purdue University Research Center in Economics (PURCE), and registration is required.

  Professor Dillenberger received his PhD from Princeton University and has taught at Penn since 2008. His current research focuses on microeconomic theory, and, in particular, on decision theory. He is mostly interested in models of non-expected utility, the economics of risk and time, and social preferences.

Dr. Mumford is a Professor of Economics and Kozuch Director of the Purdue University Research Center in Economics who researches the effects of public policy in areas including education, labor markets, and personal finance. He has been at Purdue since 2007 and teaches courses in econometrics and applied microeconometrics. In this last PURCE event of 2023, Mumford will share data on college-going in the U.S. Fewer high school graduates across the country are choosing to pursue higher education, with Indiana ranking particularly low. Please RSVP by November 10. Professor of Management Rahman will address digital platforms and self-regulation, competition, and regulatory oversight. Tech companies are the most valued firms in the current economy. Their success is attributed to their platform business model. The economics of platforms is different than a traditional “pipe” business model. What are some issues to consider as we think about policies to regulate tech companies? Dr. Rahman’s research focuses on measuring and quantifying the impact of digital transformations led by the Internet and related technologies; the economic value of digital traces (or digital footprints), especially in driving consumer behavior and improving decision-making; and the impact of information technology on a firm’s business and operational practices.

  October PURCE Economic Lunch: Measuring Crime

Please RSVP by September 1. When we say that crime is going up, what does that really mean? Crime, when done effectively, isn’t observed, so how do we know if it is going up or down? Dr. Jillian Carr will discuss the different statistics that we can use to measure crime, how they capture different phenomena, and how they can be used and abused to justify policy decisions. Carr researches the economics of crime and poverty. She has published research papers that examine the link between SNAP disbursement schedules and domestic violence; on the effects of COVID-19 stay-at-home orders on domestic violence; and on the relationship between juvenile curfews and urban gun violence. She’s currently studying, among other topics, the impacts of stimulus payments on crime. Since the Industrial Revolution, most of the world’s largest cities have been in rich, industrialized countries. But increasingly, developing-country megacities are surpassing their developed country counterparts in terms of population. The rapid urbanization of low-income countries imposes unique challenges to the environment, public health, and access to economic opportunities. In this talk, Zou will discuss how good urban economic policies can address those challenges. Zou is an empirical economist with research interests in labor economics, urban economics and economic development. He joined the Daniels School of Business last year, coming to us from Michigan State University. He teaches urban economics at Purdue
